Nigel Kalton at his sixtieth birthday conference. Nigel Kalton was born June 20, 1946, in Bromley, England. The name Kalton is an anglicized form of the original German family name, Kaltenbach, which is actually the name which appears on Nigel’s birth certificate. He was the son of Gordon and Stella Kalton. Nigel was educated at Dulwich College, where he excelled at both mathematics and chess. He played chess on the college team with Ray Keene. Keene later became Britain’s second chess grandmaster despite losing once to Kalton in the Dulwich College championship. Nigel then studied mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he met his wife, Jennifer, to whom he was married for forty-one years. They later had two children, Neil and Helen, and four grandchildren. He and Keene played chess for Trinity College. He twice came in second in the Cambridge University chess championship.
